The left-wing politician was elected to parliament, and then news came that police had opened an investigation into suspected election fraud. Now Ali is breaking his silence.
"I have seen reports and comments in which conclusions have been drawn about me before the ongoing proceedings and investigations have been allowed to run their course. For me, it is important that the facts come out and that people are not judged in public before there is proper evidence," he writes on his Facebook page.
He has requested a two-week leave of absence from parliament because of the situation he finds himself in.
Ali further writes that he reacted to the way his background was highlighted and that a discussion must be able to be held objectively "regardless of name, background or skin color."
