Last year's newcomer to NHL hockey, Utah, played as Utah Hockey Club while waiting for its new name – which the fans would vote for.
The result is now in: Utah Mammoth.
"We are thrilled to be able to celebrate today's announcement with the entire state", wrote the club in a press release.
The new name is based on the extinct species mammoth that, among other things, lived in Utah over 10,000 years ago. The naming process took 13 months and over 850,000 people voted.
The NHL team, which plays in the city of Salt Lake City and has Swede Kevin Stenlund in the squad, made its entrance in the league this season. This after owners Ryan and Ashley Smith bought the entire Arizona Coyotes, and relocated the organization to Utah.
Utah missed the Stanley Cup playoffs.
