"This agreement ensures that China and Russia cannot have any bases in Greenland, that they cannot send any forces to Greenland, and that the necessary mechanisms are in place to prevent investments in sensitive sectors," a department official said.
When President Donald Trump announced the agreement late Friday evening, Swedish time, he stated that "no adversary of the United States will ever be allowed to have a base in Greenland" without American approval.
Earlier on Friday evening, the Reuters news agency reported, citing sources, that the negotiations on the agreement concerned, among other things, measures to limit China's presence and influence in Greenland.
The security agreement is to be signed in connection with next week's UN General Assembly.
