The United States took home the gold in a thrilling showdown with Japan in the team competition, as the first figure skating medal at the Milan-Cortina Olympics was awarded.

The USA and Japan were tied in the overall standings heading into the final men's free program.

There, the American prodigy Ilia Malinin won the expected "duel" against Japan's Shun Sato - and the gold for the American team. Not without some nervous moments, however, as Malinin's program contained both high-difficulty elements and a few mistakes.

Host nation Italy took bronze, winning its first Olympic medal in the team competition - to great cheers in Milan.

On Monday, figure skating continues with ice dancing and a historic Swedish presence on the ice. Norwegian Milla Ruud Reitan received Swedish citizenship a month ago and competes with partner Nikolaj Majorov; together they will be the first Swedish couple in ice dancing since the sport was introduced to the Olympic program in Innsbruck in 1976.
