Just the tariffs against Canada and Mexico were the first move from Trump's side as president when it comes to trade measures. The two countries have since been given a reprieve and there has been some uncertainty as to when they would come into force.
This will therefore take place from next week onwards and, in addition, China will be hit with an additional ten percent surcharge.
The tariffs against neighboring countries Mexico and Canada are, according to Trump, a response to, among other things, the drugs flowing into the USA from the two countries.
"We cannot allow this hostage situation to continue to harm the USA and therefore – until it stops or is significantly reduced – the proposed tariffs will come into force as announced, on March 4", Trump writes.
For example, Mexico has announced that it will strengthen border control, but Trump claims that narcotics continue to enter the USA "at very high and unacceptable levels".
The announcement comes after a period filled with tariff threats from Trump's side. On Wednesday, he warned that similar tariffs would be imposed on products from the EU.
