The USA sees two reasons why Syria has lost the country's second-largest city, Aleppo, to jihadists and other forces: the country's no to a peace process in 2015 and too great trust in support from Russia and Iran.
This emerges from a statement by Sean Savett, spokesperson for the USA's National Security Council. Both things contributed to what is now unfolding, according to Savett.
For safety's sake, he makes it clear that the USA has nothing to do with the lightning-fast offensive against Aleppo from opponents of Assad.
"It (i.e. the offensive) is led by Hayat Tahir al-Shalam, which is a terrorist organization", emphasizes Sean Savett.
