In a conversation with Rwanda's President Paul Kagame, Rubio expressed that "the USA is deeply concerned about the escalation of the ongoing conflict in eastern Congo-Kinshasa, particularly the fall of Goma to the Rwanda-backed armed group M23", according to a statement from the American Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday local time.
Kagame himself describes the conversation as a "productive conversation" about "the need to ensure a ceasefire" and emphasizes that he looks forward to working with the Trump administration.
The USA has for several years warned Rwanda about its support for M23.
On Sunday, the armed group and Rwandan forces entered central Goma in eastern Congo-Kinshasa, after a week-long offensive.
More than 100 people have been killed and nearly 1,000 have been injured over three days, according to AFP's compilation of data from local hospitals.
