The USA has carried out an air strike against an IS leader in Somalia.

Defense Minister Pete Hegseth says that the attack was coordinated with the Somali government and that it was carried out in a mountainous area in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland.

According to the Pentagon, "several" people were killed, but no civilians.

"This action further reduces IS's ability to plan and carry out terrorist attacks that threaten American citizens, our partners, and innocent civilians, and sends a clear signal that the US is always ready to find and eliminate terrorists who threaten the US", Hegseth writes in a statement.

Information about the attack first came from President Donald Trump, who on his platform Truth Social writes:

"This morning, I gave the order for precise military airstrikes against a high-ranking IS leader and other terrorists he had recruited and led in Somalia."
