The statement comes shortly after the US envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, mentioned the Egyptian initiative – which has the support of several Arab countries – in more positive terms.
We need to discuss it more, but it's a well-intentioned first step from the Egyptians, said Witkoff to journalists.
Trump has said that he wants the US to take over the Gaza Strip to exploit it, which includes the displacement of Gaza's population to other countries in the region. The idea has been sharply criticized worldwide.
Egypt's plan calls for, among other things, a transitional government in Gaza aimed at preserving the prospects for a two-state solution. The goal is to hold elections in the Palestinian territories within a year.
The Arab countries also want the Palestinian Authority (PA) and PLO to govern in Gaza, thereby replacing Hamas.
The reconstruction of Gaza – which, according to UN estimates, will cost around 560 billion kronor – is to be financed through a fund, according to the plan.
