USA, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Egypt on Friday called for a three-month humanitarian ceasefire in Sudan, followed by a permanent ceasefire and a nine-month transition to civilian rule.

In a joint statement, the four countries state that the transition should "meet the Sudanese people's desire for a smooth establishment of an independent, civilian-led government with broad legitimacy and accountability".

Since 2023, Sudan has been affected by a civil war between the army - which has control over most government institutions - and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people, displaced millions and created what the UN describes as one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.
