The agency, which has been severely affected by President Donald Trump's cuts, has no longer the possibility to follow up on already dispatched aid.
The agency fears that the money – equivalent to nearly 90 billion kronor – has fallen into the wrong hands. The funds intended as aid and already sent out risk ending up with extremists or warring parties in armed conflicts, warns USAID.
Investigators at the control agency issuing the warning tell the news agency AP that they have great concerns about future controls, even if USAID can continue its operations in another and smaller form.
USAID, which has almost completely shut down, has been taken over by Foreign Minister Marco Rubio, who is to review whether existing aid projects "put the US first".
