Shortly before halftime, American Folarin Balogun scored the 1-0 goal on home soil at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in California.
The start of the second half was a fairly uneventful affair - until Folarin Balogun found himself in the spotlight again. In a duel with Tarik Muharemović, the American goalscorer's foot landed on the opponent's ankle, causing him to fall to the grass in pain. After a VAR review, Balogun was shown a red card.
Despite the blow, Muharemović was later able to continue playing.
The huge setback of being a man down did not stop the USA, who struck again in the 82nd minute. After Bosnia-Herzegovina was shown a yellow card, the home nation was awarded a free kick right in front of goal - whereupon Malik Tillman elegantly secured the 2-0 victory.
"We had to dig deep for that. It didn't go exactly as planned with that red card, but it just shows what a good team we are," said American star Christian Pulisic after the game, according to the AP.
It is the twelfth red card handed out during this year's championship - already three times as many as during the entire 2022 World Cup in Qatar, according to the BBC.
The USA will face Belgium in the upcoming round of 16.
