On Saturday morning, Iran's Revolutionary Guards announced that they had attacked American targets in response to attacks by the United States.
"If the aggression is repeated, our response will be even more powerful than this," the Guards' statement on Iranian state television read.
The United States has not confirmed the alleged Iranian attacks and it is unclear which targets were attacked.
But this morning, Bahrain's Foreign Ministry announced that the country was attacked during the early hours by "a number of Iranian drones." The small island nation is home to an American naval base, among other things.
Shortly afterwards, the British military's maritime watchdog, UKMTO, announced that an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz had been hit by a projectile. The ship's crew was reported to be unharmed.
The US military has announced that a shipping lane near Oman in the strait will be expanded for even more incoming and outgoing traffic - which is likely to increase tensions.
“A flagrant crime”
The escalation has been simmering since Thursday, when a ship passing through the Strait of Hormuz was reported to have been attacked by a drone originating from Iran.
On Friday, the US carried out new airstrikes against Iran, which were said to be retaliation for the ship attack. The targets were said to be weapons depots and a radar station on the Iranian coast.
"I don't like that they attacked yesterday," Trump told reporters at the White House shortly before the US carried out its airstrikes.
An explosion was heard in the port city of Sirik in southern Iran, according to state Iranian television, which reported that a projectile had hit the area.
From the Iranian side, it has been described as a "manipulation of the ceasefire", referring to the fact that ships did not follow the rules stipulated in the memorandum of understanding that the US and Iran entered into last week.
Following the US response, the Foreign Ministry in Tehran declared that the attacks constituted “a flagrant violation” of the ceasefire.
Negotiations are ongoing
The United States and Iran have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at eventually ending the war between the countries permanently. A ceasefire is in place while negotiations continue.
On Friday evening, US Vice President JD Vance said that Iran could call the US if it had objections to how the memorandum of understanding was being implemented.
"Violence will be met with violence," Vance wrote in a post on X.
