Deputy Secretary of State Elbridge Colby will meet with the ambassadors of the 32 NATO countries in Brussels to report on the situation, officials told the AFP news agency.
The US is consulting with allies as part of its troop review, a NATO official told AFP.
A review has been underway since last summer and, together with critical statements from those in power in Washington, has led to concerns within NATO about a large-scale withdrawal of US forces from Europe.
The US had a peak of almost half a million soldiers in Europe in the 1950s, but is now down to around 80,000, according to the think tank CFR.
