The trade war between the US and Canada continues. The US's new import ban, which will take effect in three weeks, comes after Canada on Tuesday imposed punitive tariffs on several American goods.
The former good neighbours have been trading barbs for weeks over the two countries' economies as well as their leaders.
The core of the dispute is over who should be the major industrial power, primarily in the automotive sector. Recently, however, US President Donald Trump has also targeted Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier.
In addition to the import ban, the US is expanding the list of goods subject to 50 percent tariffs.
Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc says, according to AFP, that the government is "evaluating the latest tariff measures."
Earlier on Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a televised speech that the punitive tariffs against the United States are "necessary."
Our tariffs are necessary to protect our workers, our businesses and our communities, he said.
