The United States is temporarily suspending visa applications from citizens of 75 countries, Fox News reports.

The countries affected include Somalia, Russia, Afghanistan, Brazil, Iran, Iraq, Egypt and Nigeria.

The suspension will take effect on January 21 and will remain in effect until further notice. In the meantime, the review process for applicants will be reassessed.

The purpose is to ensure that anyone assessed as needing some form of public support is properly screened, according to the US State Department.
