The 33-page strategy published on the White House website states that the Trump administration wants to put an end to global mass migration.
The US is urged to avoid following the same path as Europe, where the strategy sees a risk of "civilizational extinction" through, among other things, immigration, low birth rates and alleged threats to freedom of expression. Europe's faltering economy is a further sign of how the continent has weakened, according to the White House.
According to the strategy, Europe will be unrecognizable in 20 years, unless the trend is broken.
“Strategic stability”
But at the same time, great importance is placed on transatlantic cooperation in the policy document. It states that Europe is strategically and culturally “vital” to the United States and its prosperity, and that it wants to restore Europe’s “civilizational self-confidence.”
According to the letter, many in Europe see Russia as an existential threat, and the United States should then work to ensure that Europe is not dominated by an "adversary," without further specification.
Regarding Ukraine, the US wants a quick end to the fighting so that the European economy can be strengthened and Ukraine rebuilt so that the country can survive as a state. With regard to Russia, it wants what it calls “strategic stability.”
“Most powerful and deadliest”
Regarding the role of the United States in the world, the document is ambiguous. On the one hand, the United States is to have the world’s most modern nuclear arsenal and an army that is the “most powerful” and “deadliest” in the world. It is to ensure that the Middle East and its oil and gas are not controlled by an “adversary” and that “American supremacy” is to be re-established in Latin America.
At the same time, it is stated that the United States should break with the long tradition of global dominance, but that it should not allow itself to be dominated either.
In Asia, the Trump administration wants to persuade Japan and South Korea to increase their defense spending and do more to support Taiwan against China.
