The company's results are seen as an indicator of the development in artificial intelligence, as the company manufactures the majority of the processors that drive the technology
Wall Street's three leading indexes lifted, albeit moderately. The broad S&P 500 index and the technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index both rose 0.2 percent, while the Dow Jones industrial index increased 0.3 percent.
But some companies soared after reporting quarterly results that exceeded analysts' forecasts, among them the department store chain Kohl's, up 24 percent, and the IT company Mongo DB, which rose 38 percent.
