The Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.1 percent, while the broad S&P 500 index moved sideways and the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index lost 0.5 percent. Apple, a heavy component of the index, was lower, its shares falling 6.2 percent.
Chipmaker Micron released a quarterly report after the stock market closed on Wednesday that beat market expectations by a wide margin. The stock rose 15.7 percent on Thursday.
Thursday's inflation report showed that core inflation in the US rose to 3.4 percent in May, according to the so-called PCE measure. This was in line with analysts' average forecast, Bloomberg reports.
