"I can confirm that I have proposed to (President Donald) Trump and (FIFA President Gianni) Infantino to replace Iran with Italy. I was born in Italy and it would be a dream to see the Azzurri in a tournament in the United States," Zampolli told the Financial Times.

Iran said earlier this year that it wanted to have its World Cup matches moved from the United States to Mexico or Canada, which FIFA said no to. Donald Trump is also not keen on Iran playing in the United States and has said that the national team's safety cannot be guaranteed.

Infantino said last week that Iran will play in the World Cup.

They really want to play and they should play, he said.
