Without going into details, a spokesperson for the US Space Force said the weapons “are capable of defending the combined forces against hostile attacks.”
Both Russia and China pose potential threats to American interests in space, according to the US Space Force.
The militarization of space has been ongoing ever since the Space Race, when both Washington and Moscow began investigating ways to both weaponize and destroy satellites.
In 1967, the superpowers and several other countries signed an agreement banning weapons of mass destruction in space. Since then, however, Russia, the US, China and India have all developed other capabilities, primarily to attack their rivals' satellites, which are important for military communications, surveillance and navigation.
