The Trump-loyal Republican died after a sudden illness, according to a statement posted on his X account. He was 71 years old.
According to NBC News , paramedics were alerted to a cardiac arrest at Graham's home on Saturday evening.
Lindsey Graham was elected to the United States Senate from South Carolina in 2003. He was one of President Donald Trump's most loyal supporters.
"He's incredible. He's been by my side for a long time," Trump said of the senator last month, according to The Washington Post .
During the Ukraine war, Graham served as an American envoy. He has visited the war-torn country several times and pushed for increased sanctions and pressure on Russia.
"We appreciate his support," Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on X on Friday, after meeting Graham in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.
Graham has also been one of the most outspoken advocates of US and Israeli attacks on Iran.
"If Iran challenges US control of the Strait of Hormuz, we will wipe them out," he said two weeks ago on
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz regrets the senator's death.
“A true friend of the State of Israel and one of our strongest and most steadfast allies,” he wrote on X.
Before Graham's time as a senator, he was a member of the House of Representatives. In 2015, he attempted to become the Republican presidential nominee in the 2016 election, but dropped out. The 2016 election was won by Donald Trump.
