"A key individual" suspected of being involved in the 2012 attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, eastern Libya, has been arrested, US Attorney General Pam Bondi said.

According to Bondi, the man has been taken to the United States on suspicion, among other things, of murder.

"We have never stopped seeking justice for this crime against our nation," Bondi said at a press conference.

Four American citizens - including Ambassador Chris Stevens - and several Libyan consulate employees were killed when about 20 attackers stormed and set fire to the buildings on September 11, 2012.

The attack led to harsh criticism of then-President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

According to the United States, the attack was carried out by terrorists linked to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.
