The US described the attacks as self-defense and said they were directed at targets in the area around the Strait of Hormuz during the day.
“The targets included missile installations and Iranian vessels attempting to lay mines,” Centcom spokesman Timothy Hawkins said in a statement to CNN.
The Revolutionary Guard in Iran said on Tuesday that it had fired on American fighter jets and that an American drone in Iranian airspace had been shot down.
The country's Foreign Ministry condemned the attacks, which it called "piracy against Iranian commercial vessels" and a violation of the ceasefire, according to a statement.
Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, said in a written statement read out on state-controlled television on Tuesday that the region should no longer be "shields for American bases."
“Discussions back and forth”
US President Donald Trump has claimed in recent days that the countries are close to reaching an agreement, but has since also said that the US should not "rush" into an agreement. Despite Monday's attacks, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says that a deal is possible in the near future.
"There were some talks going on in Qatar today, so we'll see if we can make progress. I think there's a lot of back and forth going on about the exact wording of the first document, so it's going to take a few days," Rubio told reporters during a visit to India.
The Foreign Minister also insists that the Strait of Hormuz should be opened “one way or another.”
"What is happening there is illegal, unsustainable for the world, and it is unacceptable," Rubio said.
Attacks in May
The US and Iran have also previously attacked each other during the ceasefire. In early May, the US targeted Iranian military facilities in connection with Iranian missile and drone attacks on US warships.
Iran also claimed on Monday that it had shot down a "hostile" drone with stealth capabilities, but did not specify where the drone would have come from, Reuters reports, citing Iranian news agencies loyal to the regime.
