A total of 20 American ships attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz were attacked early Wednesday, Iran's Revolutionary Guards claimed, according to the state news agency Irna.
This comes after the country threatened to fire missiles at tankers off the coast of Kuwait and Bahrain and urged crews to flee.
Iranian state media also claims that the country's forces fired several missiles at a US air base in Jordan. The Jordanian army says it has destroyed 18 missiles from Iran.
According to the US military command Centcom, the attacks on Iranian oil tankers were a response to Iranian missile attacks on American ships in recent days.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says that Iran's attacks will not go unanswered.
"Iran continues its attempts to attack American ships. And every time they do it, or try to do it, they will lose tankers," he told reporters during a visit to Colombia on Tuesday, local time.
