US sanctions senior Iran Security Council official and 18 banking sector individuals

The US imposes new sanctions on Iran.

The sanctions target a senior official in Iran's Security Council, who is accused of inciting violence against protesters. In addition, sanctions are being imposed on 18 individuals in the banking sector, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced.

The sanctions, which mean that those affected cannot access funds in the United States, are primarily symbolic, as few of them are believed to have any assets in the United States.
