The sanctions can be seen as part of the US campaign against the court, which the Trump administration considers to be "politicized."
“These individuals have been directly engaged in efforts to investigate, arrest, detain, or prosecute public figures whose governments have not consented to the ICC’s jurisdiction,” reads a statement from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Several Republican senators already called for sanctions against the ICC two years ago in response to the court's arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The sanctions undermine international law, the ICC says.
“When legal actors are threatened for applying the law, it is the international order itself that is at risk,” it says.
