The reason for the sanctions is that authorities in Hong Kong are restricting the inhabitants' freedoms and rights, says Rubio in a statement from the American Foreign Ministry.

Police Chief Raymond Siu Chak-yee is thus placed on the American Finance Ministry's sanctions list. Previously, sanctions have been directed against Hong Kong's highest leader, John Lee.

The USA also notes that government officials have actively tried to silence or intimidate 19 pro-democratic activists who have fled to the USA.

Marco Rubio has, during his time as a Republican senator, criticized China and the lack of human rights in the country.
