US retail sales rise 1.2% in August, beating expectations

The increase was larger than expected. The average forecast among analysts was for a 0.8 percent increase in August, according to Bloomberg.

The figures are not adjusted for inflation. They are being reported ahead of what is expected to be an interest rate hike from the US Federal Reserve (Fed) on Wednesday evening at 8 p.m.
