"The actions of the American administration nationally and internationally have had an impact. Many countries believe that the country's influence is negative," writes the Swedish Institute (SI).
The Global Soft Power Index survey is conducted annually, in the fall, and is based on responses from over 150,000 people in 100 countries. The index consists of several different categories.
The United States still tops the overall index. This is mainly due to it being the world's best-known country and its global influence, according to SI. But its reputation abroad has plummeted, from 15th to 26th place according to the reputation sub-index. China's reputation has meanwhile risen from 27th to 18th.
Sweden's reputation is relatively stable at a high level. The overall index places Sweden in 13th place, two places lower than the previous year.
