This week, reports emerged that the US is sketching out ways to punish NATO countries that have chosen not to help the US in the war against Iran, according to Reuters. Among other things, it mentions reconsidering Britain's control over the Falkland Islands.
Now the US State Department says the US position remains firm.
"Our position on the issue of the islands remains neutral. We are aware that there are conflicting claims between Argentina and the UK," a spokesperson said.
The United States has so far chosen to recognize British administration of the islands, without taking a position on sovereignty.
Argentina and the United Kingdom have long disputed which country the archipelago belongs to.
