The $1 coin, a special edition commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States, was launched by the United States Mint on Wednesday.

The agency's website now sells rolls of 25 coins for $61 and bags of 100 coins for $154.50. They can also be purchased from vending machines at the Mint's store in Washington, D.C., for $5 each.

The coin, which looks like gold but is made of zinc, manganese, nickel and copper, is controversial. By law and tradition, sitting presidents are not allowed to appear on American coins and have not done so since 1926.

However, the US Treasury Department claims to have found a loophole in the law - and thus says the coin is completely legal.
