US Military Consultant Admits Leaking Secrets to Ethiopia for Use in Civil War Against Rebels

A man who worked as a consultant for the US military has admitted leaking top-secret information to the Ethiopian government, which used it in the civil war against rebel forces.

The 54-year-old leaked military secrets for two years and also urged his contacts on the Ethiopian side to use them in drone strikes against rebel forces, the US Department of Justice said.

“We must put an end to these people once and for all, otherwise there will never be peace in Ethiopia,” the man wrote in a message to his Ethiopian contact.

The first contacts took place during the 2020-2022 civil war between the federal army and Tigrayan rebel forces. Hundreds of thousands of people were killed in the war, and fighting broke out again a few weeks ago.

Under the terms of a plea deal, the crime is punishable by between 10 and 21 years in prison.
