The American men's team, which won Olympic gold after an upset in the final against Canada, was received with a standing ovation from both Republicans and Democrats in Congress when they were introduced by Donald Trump.

In his speech, the president revealed that goaltender Connor Hellebuyck will be awarded the Medal of Freedom, after he held a vote with the team during its visit to the White House earlier in the day.

"I said I wasn't going to give it to him unless everyone agreed. Everyone raised their hands very quickly," Trump said.

The US women's team was also invited by Trump, but declined "due to the timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments."

During the address to the nation, Trump said that the women will visit the White House at a later date.

Trump's congratulatory speech to the men after the final has been seen by many as a mockery of the women, who also won Olympic gold.

"I just have to tell you that we need to bring the women's team, you know," Trump said during the call, laughing and joking about what would happen if he didn't do it.

"I think I should be impeached," he said, and was met with laughter from several of the players.
