"From now on, the United States will bomb and destroy a bridge or power plant every time Iran fires on a ship in the Strait of Hormuz - whether with a missile, drone or other weapon," Trump wrote on social media on Wednesday.
Trump has previously issued similar threats against Iranian infrastructure.
Iran responded hours later by threatening retaliation, saying that any American attack would be answered.
The statement was made by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on X:
“Our defense doctrine is clear: an eye for an eye. Any aggressive action against Iran, including our infrastructure, will force a strong and decisive response.”
The latest developments come after eleven nights of US strikes on targets in Iran. According to Iranian state media, air defenses were activated in the capital, Tehran, overnight Wednesday. Explosions were also heard in the port city of Bushehr.
“Threatens shipping”
“Centcom forces targeted Iranian military operations centers, naval assets, aircraft hangars, drone storage facilities, and military logistics infrastructure to further degrade Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz,” the US military command Centcom wrote in a statement on X overnight.
Iran's Revolutionary Guard has in turn attacked American targets in Jordan, including the al-Faisal military base, according to the Iranian regime-linked Tasnim news agency.
Iran's military also claims to have carried out attacks on a US base in western Kuwait.
Control of Hormuz
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned envoys from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on Wednesday night about Iranian control of the Strait of Hormuz.
"If we create a precedent in the Middle East where a nation-state can decide to control an international shipping lane, charge a fee and blow up your ships if you don't pay, we have created a very dangerous precedent," he told foreign ministers attending the ASEAN meeting in the Philippines.
