The invitation was announced by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
"To solve problems, you have to invite those you disagree with, which is why we have invited President Putin to the G20 meeting. We believe it will be an opportunity for him to meet not only the president (Donald Trump) but also other world leaders," he said at a press conference.
Donald Trump was reported this summer to be preparing an invitation to Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said earlier in September that he wanted to meet Putin in Miami.
Russia is an official member of the G20, but Vladimir Putin has not attended the group's meetings since 2019.
