Inflation in the US was 2.7 percent in November. This was clearly lower than expected. The effect was an immediate stock market lift.

Economists had expected an average annual price increase of 3.1 percent.

The so-called core inflation rate was 2.6 percent, compared to expectations of 3.0 percent.

Futures trading rose on the US stock exchanges. The Stockholm Stock Exchange also rose slightly further.

The inflation figure increases the likelihood that the US Federal Reserve will lower interest rates.
