The US is imposing new sanctions on Iran's oil industry, and says it is targeting the transportation of the oil.
Among other things, sanctions are being imposed on more than 20 people, companies and vessels.
"The United States is acting to forcefully restrict Iran's ability to generate revenue as it attempts to hold the Strait of Hormuz hostage," the State Department said in a statement.
