US Halts Intelligence Sharing with Ukraine: What It Means for Europe

The USA stops providing Ukraine with intelligence information, according to information from several sources. The stop can be a hard blow for Ukraine. The USA has entirely world-leading capabilities. The British have also shared intelligence, but the USA is the very best, says Peter Haldén at the Defence University.

Intelligence information has been an important part of the US's aid to Ukraine during the recent years' war, aid that has been questioned and withdrawn under President Donald Trump to put pressure on Ukraine.

Wednesday's reports that the US will no longer share intelligence information are not particularly surprising, according to Peter Haldén, associate professor and university lecturer in war science at the Defence University.

One could have foreseen this in some way since Trump was elected.

Signals Intelligence

Intelligence from the US has been crucial for Ukraine over the three years that have passed since Russia's large-scale invasion. This includes signals intelligence, i.e., the collection of electronic signals in radio and internet traffic that can be intercepted deep into enemy territory.

It has been clear throughout this entire war, but also specifically in certain situations – for example, in the Ukrainian counteroffensive – that having this type of resource on one's side plays a very significant role.

No Free Flow

Even if the US continues to share intelligence information with countries allied with Ukraine, it is hardly of any help.

With the greatest likelihood, the US will say that they can share their intelligence situation but that it cannot be shared further. There is no free flow of information in this world. Information is hard currency, so if it is to have an effect against Ukraine, one does not want it to simply flow on via the UK.
