The US presidential administration is halting all asylum decisions in the country after the shooting of two National Guardsmen in the capital, Washington, DC, on Wednesday.

The suspected shooter is a 29-year-old man from Afghanistan who came to the United States in 2021 and was granted asylum earlier this year. He served in Afghanistan's U.S.-backed army for 10 years, relatives and government sources tell NBC News.

The announcement to stop all asylum decisions comes on Saturday night Swedish time after President Donald Trump had already ordered a pause in all migration cases involving Afghan citizens.

On Friday morning, Swedish time, he also announced that all immigration from developing countries would be paused with immediate effect.

One of the soldiers shot, 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom, has died from her injuries. The other soldier is being treated in hospital with serious injuries.
