Deregulation will reduce costs by hundreds of billions of dollars for the industry, according to the EPA.
The decision marks another break with the climate and environmental policies pursued under Democratic presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama. A long list of environmental regulations have been dismantled under Donald Trump, who has promised to “unleash” American energy production and has described climate change as a hoax.
EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin has described deregulation as a way to put an end to Biden and Obama's "war on so much of our domestic energy supply."
Environmental and public health organizations warn that the new rules will have a major impact on people's health and are expected to appeal the decision.
