The American president confirmed at a press conference at the White House the information from Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who wrote on Telegram earlier on Friday:
"Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will go to Moscow and on Sunday they will visit Kyiv."
The mediators' trip was announced by Ukraine on Thursday, and on Friday the same information came from Russia. Trump said he is optimistic about the weekend.
We're sending them over to see if we can get something done, and there's a good chance we can, he said.
Zelenskyy writes in his post that Ukraine will refrain from airstrikes against Russia during Witkoff and Kushner's trip and calls on Russia to do the same in order to give the negotiations a chance.
“We care about them, not Russia,” he writes.
The American envoys have previously visited Moscow several times to discuss how peace can be achieved. However, they have not visited Kyiv, despite repeated invitations.
