USA abolishes the exception for import duty on small packages. Previously, a number of countries, including Sweden, stopped packages to USA while waiting for a decision.

The abolition is motivated by the Trump administration by the exception, which has applied to small packages from abroad to a value not exceeding 800 dollars (just over 7,500 kronor), has been used to avoid customs duties and to smuggle drugs.

Certain types of personal items and gifts remain duty-free. A previously announced example is gifts from private individuals to a value of up to 100 dollars, according to Postnord.

The decision has been expected and created concern among small business owners and warnings of increased consumer prices.

Shipments worth less than 800 dollars have been stopped from a number of countries, including Sweden, pending notification from the US on how the packages will be customs cleared. Postnord has returned packages to the sender during the pause.

Ordinary letters without goods are not affected by the pause. Nor are shipments sent from the US.
