The energy shortage in Cuba is acute, and is about to lead to a humanitarian crisis in the authoritarian country.
The US Treasury Department, which is responsible for US sanctions regimes, announced on Wednesday that it will allow “transactions that support the Cuban people, including Cuba’s private sector.”
The sanctions concern, among other things, oil exports from Venezuela, which have largely been stopped since the US military detained and abducted then-President Nicolás Maduro.
President Donald Trump has announced that American companies should be given increased access to Venezuela's extensive oil resources.
The Trump administration has also issued several warnings to the regime in Havana.
