Closed oil pipelines and attacks on energy transport in the Middle East are behind this development.

Diesel prices in the United States rose above $6 per gallon for the first time ever last week, prompting President Donald Trump to demand that Ukraine and Russia stop attacking energy facilities.

Gasoline prices in the US have also risen sharply this year, up 54 percent since their annual low in January.

The price of North Sea oil - $107 per barrel - is up 77 percent since the turn of the year, while the price of natural gas on the European market has risen 191 percent to 82 euros per megawatt hour.
