The announcement comes after a two-hour meeting between Trump and his closest advisors in the "situation room" - the part of the White House that serves as a command center for urgent situations and crises, the official said.

President Trump will only agree to a deal that is good for the United States and meets all of his conditions, the official said.

Iran can never have access to nuclear weapons.

Before the meeting, Trump wrote on Truth Social that the goal was to "make a final decision," but according to information provided to The New York Times, the president has not reached any such conclusion.

“More than capable”

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Saturday that the U.S. could resume war with Iran.

"Our ability to resume operations if necessary is based on the fact that we are more than capable of doing so, and that our stocks are more than sufficient for this, both there and around the world," he said during a defense summit in Singapore, AFP reports.

The U.S. military command CENTCOM posted on X that U.S. forces "remain present and vigilant throughout the region."

Extension

Several U.S. media outlets reported earlier this week, citing sources, that Iranian and U.S. negotiators have agreed on a draft memorandum of understanding, but that the leaders have not yet approved it.

The proposal, according to the reports, includes an extension of the ceasefire by 60 days. At that time, negotiations on Iran's nuclear energy program will begin, the Strait of Hormuz will be opened to commercial shipping, and the U.S. naval blockade will be gradually lifted.
