The purpose of the nuclear microreactors is to enable military bases to be self-sufficient in electricity outside the regular power grid. The investment involves paying $2.2 billion, just under SEK 21 billion, to five different suppliers who will build and own the reactors. The Defense Department says it expects more than 20 small-scale nuclear power plants to be built in the future.
