ExxonMobil and BP America could each receive up to two million barrels of oil, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said in a statement.
The oil giants must return the crude to reserves by 2027 and will contribute more than they borrowed, according to the US Department of Energy.
Oil prices have previously been pushed up by Storm Isaias.
However, this is not the first time this year that oil has been released from the country’s reserves. Since the US and Israel attacked Iran in February, 132 million barrels have been released.
