Upset in front of a wild crowd – the world number two is out

Carried by a fanatical home crowd, Ugo Humbert could take his biggest win in his tennis career. The 26-year-old Frenchman defeated world number two Carlos Alcaraz with 2–1 in sets in the Paris Masters. A crazy match! Fantastic atmosphere, says Humbert to the ATP tour after the win.

The referee had to repeatedly urge the audience to be quiet when everything was at stake in the final stage of the third set in Bercy Arena in the round of 16 of the Paris Masters between world number two Carlos Alcaraz and home player Ugo Humbert, who is ranked 18th in the world.

That's enough now! Both players are being affected. You're affecting both Ugo and Carlos, please, said referee Richard Haigh.

When Ugo Humbert acquired two match points in Alcaraz's serve, it sounded like a football match. The Spaniard saved the first, but not the second. Humbert could throw his cap in the air to a deafening cheer.

This is the biggest win of my career, says Humbert.

Humbert played a great game in the first set and took it with 6–1. In the second, Alcaraz woke up and could level the score to 1–1 in sets via 6–3. In the third set, however, the Spaniard could not resist Humbert, who won the set with 7–5. Next, Humbert will face Jordan Thompson, Australia, in the quarterfinal.

Even before the tournament, the organizer was hit by star withdrawals. World number one Jannik Sinner fell ill during his preparations in Paris and never made it to the start. By then, title defender Novak Djokovic had already announced that he would not play in France.
