On Friday, the announcement came that the Japanese central bank would raise interest rates by 25 basis points to 0.75 percent in the hope of bringing down inflation, which remains above target.
The new interest rate level is the highest since 1995, CNBC reports.
The Tokyo stock market is rising in connection with the announcement. The Nikkei 225 had climbed by about 1.4 percent at lunchtime, while the broader Topix was up by 1.1 percent.
Other leading indices in Asia also rose on Friday. Shenzhen is up 0.9 percent, Shanghai climbs 0.6 percent.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.7 percent and South Korea's Kospi rose 0.6 percent.
